A toddler has been left with horrific burns after pulling a hot cup of tea from a bench just days before her mother was set to walk down the aisle to marry her high school sweetheart.

Bride-to-be Naomi Watson was finalising the last minute details for her wedding day when 20-month-old Sophie got seriously injured.

The mother of two said her daughter was 'exploring, as babies do' when she pulled a freshly made cup of tea from the bench, spilling it all over her body and damaging her delicate skin.

Her distressed parents, who also have a son with autism that needs constant care, have set up a fundraising appeal in a bid to pay for an expensive skin graft operation for their daughter.

'Doing everything they can Sophie's parents have spent their every waking moment by her side in hospital, despite their pending nuptials in a matter of days,' Ms Watson penned in an emotional plea.

After undergoing her first surgery on Tuesday, the little bub has returned home on Thursday afternoon just in time for her parent's special day.

'Today we have some great news. Baby Sophie will be on her way home later today. Just in time for mummy and daddy's wedding tomorrow [Friday],' Ms Watson wrote.

'Sophie will still be required to attend the children's hospital for fresh dressings every few days and also skin graft procedures. But for now having her home for the wedding is a small victory.

'Thank you everyone for your kind words and support it means a great deal to Sophie and her family.'

The Okapi, or forest giraffe, and the sub-Saharan white-winged flufftail – one of Africa’s rarest birds – are now on the brink of extinction, according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).

The two animals are the latest additions to its Red List of Threatened Species, which now runs to a shocking 21,286 species. However, there is good news. Two species of albatross, the leatherback turtle and the island fox native to California’s Channel Islands are showing signs of recovery.

The update highlights serious declines in the population of the okapi (okapia johnstoni), a close relative of the giraffe, unique to the rainforests of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). The species is now Endangered, only one step away from the highest risk of extinction, with numbers dwindling across its range. Poaching and habitat loss, as well as the presence of rebels, elephant poachers and illegal miners, are the principal threats to its survival.

According to the update, almost 200 species of bird are now classed as critically endangered, facing the highest risk of extinction. The white-winged flufftail (sarothrura ayresi), a small, secretive bird which occurs in Ethiopia, Zimbabwe and South Africa, is the latest species to join this category. 

Destruction and degradation of its habitat, including wetland drainage, conversion for agriculture, water abstraction, overgrazing by livestock and cutting of marsh vegetation, have driven it to this precarious state. Urgent action is now needed to better understand the species’ ecology and to address these threats, the IUCN said.

Although the global population of the leatherback turtle (dermochelys coriacea) - the largest of all living turtles – has improved, the species continues to face serious threats at a subpopulation level. 

Leatherbacks are a single species, globally comprising seven biologically and geographically distinct subpopulations. The Northwest Atlantic Ocean Leatherback subpopulation is abundant and increasing thanks to successful conservation initiatives in the region. 

In contrast, the East Pacific Ocean subpopulation, which nests along the Pacific coast of the Americas, and the West Pacific Ocean subpopulation, found in Malaysia, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands, are both in severe decline due to extensive egg harvest and incidental capture in fishing gear. Targeted conservation efforts are needed to prevent their collapse.

The IUCN Red List update also brings good news for some of the species assessed. Two species of albatross - one of the most threatened of the planet’s bird families – are now at a lower risk of extinction due to increases in their populations. 

The black-browed albatross (thalassarche melanophrys) has moved from endangered to near-threatened and the black-footed albatross (phoebastria nigripes) has moved from vulnerable to near-threatened. By-catch in fisheries is the main threat to these species.

All four subspecies have now recovered or are approaching recovery. This is mainly due to successful conservation work of IUCN Member the U.S. National Park Service, which included captive breeding, reintroduction, vaccination against canine diseases and relocation of golden eagles.

What does YOUR train station taste like?｜倫敦地鐵 ＝ 美味饗宴？

Does your tube stop taste of apple pie, HP sauce or putrid meat? For James Wannerton these are just some of the strange tastes he experiences as he travels on the London Underground.

A journey on the Central Line for the 54-year-old will start off tasting of burnt bacon, and gradually change to taste of cheese, sausage, sprouts and cabbage water. And the tastes are very real. ‘They are all involuntary and cannot be "turned off" or "toned down",’ Mr Wannerton said.

That’s because Mr Wannerton, from Dollis Hill in North London, is one of an estimated two-and-a-half million people who suffer from gustatory auditory synaesthesia. This a cross-sensory neurological condition which means he can literally taste words.

The bad news for people in Mile End is their area tastes of fingernails. London Bridge tastes of lumpy mashed potato, West Hampstead of spam and chocolate and Covent Garden of digestives. ‘As a young child I used to travel to school on the London Underground and because of my synaesthesia, on each trip I experienced a taste and texture sensation of each station name,’ said Mr Wannerton. ‘I used to recognise where I was along the journey by taste just as much as by the actual location. ‘I did this every time I travelled on the Underground and it very soon became an involuntary and very automatic additional response to my general perception.’

While he can get tastes and textures from simply reading a station name, the ‘ambiance’ and appearance can also alter that experience. ‘The tastes are 100 per cent consistent in that they never change,’ said Mr Wannerton.

Developing countries have called for legally-binding rules that force rich countries to provide money when they are affected by extreme weather events such as Typhoon Haiyan.

Currently, wealthy nations such as Britain offer donations following a natural disaster. But a group of nations came together to argue extreme events, such as droughts or typhoons, are becoming more frequent because of man-made global warming.

Brazil's representative called for countries which industrialised earlier - such as Britain - to bear the brunt of the financial burden because they have had higher greenhouse gas emissions for longer.

The issue has threatened to derail a fragile consensus at the two-week UN summit in Warsaw. The 191 nations addressed the idea of some members paying ‘compensation’ to poor countries for natural disasters. A group of 130 nations led by China even called for scientists to examine historical emissions dating back to the time of the industrial revolution in 1850.

Taxi drivers have proposed ten new road signs for Britain’s cities - including warnings about potholes, rickshaws and school run congestion zones. They have also identified ten senseless signs they say should be scrapped such as warnings about horse-drawn vehicles and migratory toads on roads.

And Highway Code updates that cabbies suggest include bans on texting, wearing killer heels and relying on Google Maps while driving.

初到英國旅遊的遊客，可能會被當地複雜、繁多的路標搞得暈頭轉向。為了與時俱進，以及讓人們意識到低頭的危險性，近日，倫敦的計程車司機提出增加「前方有路坑、人力車出沒道路、學校擁擠區等」10項新路標。

此外，倫敦最近出現9起自行車騎士在公路被撞的意外事故，英國計程車司機聯盟因而向交通法規部提議，新增自行車轉彎警示路標、司機開車時若光腳或穿高於三英寸的鞋子則為非法、開車時依賴 Google Map 或發短信，則會被開單罰款。針對行人，則新增警示標識如過馬路別發訊息、戴耳機聽音樂使注意力不集中等，且亂闖紅燈是違法的。
